::JINA Japanese Slang Lesson ::
Lesson 5: Application of Baka
I'm sure you've all asked your Japanese friends how to say "dumb" in Japanese. They may giggle a little bit, and they will tell you it is "baka". "So how do you say'stupid'?" you may ask. Again the answer is "baka". "Then what about'idiot'??" "baka." "What about'dork'?" "baka." You get the idea… There are just not too many words to describe a mentally challenged person in Japanese. Here are a few of the variations of the word "baka".
[baka]..dumb, stupid, silly, idiot, etc.
[obaka-san]...silly person (in a cute way)
[baka yaro]...stupid person (in an angry way)
[ohbaka yaro]...the biggest idiot in the world
[baka] (fill in the blank)...___ freak. (e.g., "golf baka" is golf freak, "tsuri baka" is fishing freak, etc.)
